Growing up in the beautiful port city of Veracruz, Mexico, I
was surrounded by a family of artists – bead-makers,
painters & musicians – who embraced the arts and culture of
Mexico.
When I left my native land for America, I was overwhelmed by
the void of what I had left behind. Wanting to share my
heritage with family and friends in The States, I dreamed of
creating jewelry as vibrant as my Mexican culture.
In 2004, I created Mi Tierra Designs, hoping to bridge the
gap between my two worlds.
Inspired by the vibrant colors and rich textures I recall from
youth, I now create one-of-a-kind wearable art from my studio
showroom in Maquoketa, IA.
Best known for my bold and colorful designs, I take pride in the quality
and unique style which defines me as a self-taught artist.
Experimenting with glass is my passion and I am not afraid to push the
limit with glass to achieve a look recognized as uniquely mine.
SILVIA’S ARTISTIC PROCESS
Using fusible glass, which melts easily and dichronic glass which
changes color based upon ambient light, I create a variety of pendants,
earrings and rings.
To create my designer pieces, I manipulate the glass, which becomes
like taffy as it fires in the kiln. I then cut, grind and polish the piece
several times. Once the piece is finished, I wrap it with silver wire,
semi-precious stones and glass beads to give it my stamp of approval.
Working with diachronic glass is a challenge I enjoy. Because its
nature is unpredictable, no two pieces are ever alike. Each aspect of
the design contributions to its creation – from the piece of glass I
choose, to the position of the glass in the kiln and the kiln’s temperature
– all work together to create a piece of jewelry like none other.
As an established artist, my designs have won numerous awards and
been exhibited in the company of internationally known artists. My
boutiques throughout the Midwest.
